3 Tips for Preventing Water Damage

HomeBlog3 Tips for Preventing Water Damage

We at Davie Property Restoration know from experience just how severe water damage can be, and we want to help home and business owners prevent it if at all possible. If you want to protect your property from the possibility of water damage, read on to learn three expert tips for reducing your level of risk.

reduce your risk of water damage

1.   Clean Your Gutters- One of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of water damage is to make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear. We at Davie Property Restoration recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockages or ice dams, both of which can lead to standing water that damages your roof or siding, or to overflow puddles that damage your foundation. In addition, make sure that water can flow freely down your downspouts and that the spouts are directed away from your home or business.

2.   Manage Trees and Shrubs- Another common cause of water damage is untamed vegetation–specifically, when the roots of trees or shrubs get tangled around underground pipes and break them. To avoid this situation, you should minimize any landscaping around your utility pipes to keep roots away from them. In addition, you may end up having to remove any trees or shrubs that have grown too large, as their root systems can threaten your utility lines even if the above-ground plants seem to be well away from the building.

3.   Watch Your Water Bill- A third tip for preventing water damage is to pay close attention to your monthly water bill to discern any changes. Another big cause of water damage is leaks, and in many cases, the earliest evidence for a leak is a spike in your water bill. If you notice that your water bill has gone up significantly without any corresponding change in your usage habits, we at Davie Property Restoration encourage you to give us a call to have our experts inspect your property for damage.
